The Whig Party is Britain’s oldest progressive political party, and was originally founded in 1678. For hundreds of years Whigs developed the British constitution by fighting for equal rights for minorities, and promoting democracy and human rights. The Whigs established the fundamental British principles that all citizens are equal before the law, and that the law of Parliament is supreme over the Crown and the crowd. By 2014 it was clear that these principles needed defending more than ever, and the Whig Party returned to promote decency, progress, and intelligence in British politics. We contested four seats at the 2015 General Election, and we are looking forward to being part of the national conversation over the next decade.
“The Whigs look towards the people, whose welfare is the end and object of all government.”
Prime Minister John Russell
